Madhuri Dixit

Counted among the ten best Indian actresses ever, Madhuri Dixit was the Numero Uno of the Hindi films from late 1980s till the end of 1990s. So much was her popularity that a film ‘Main Madhuri Dixit Bonna Chhahti Hoon’ was made in 2003, soon after her temporary retirement from the silver screen after memorable ‘Devdas’.

Madhuri Dixit’s debut film was Abodh in 1986 at the age of 19, but the movie did not cut much ice. The initial failure followed her in some more films till the release of Tezaab in 1988. The blockbuster Tezaab actually launched her career with its popular dance sequence in the hit song ‘Ek Do Teen’.

Thereafter Maduhri Dixit did not look back with one to one Super Dupers rollicking her career. The hit films of the period include Dayaban (1988), Ram Lakhan (1989), Dil (1990), Sajan (1991), Beta (1992) and Khalnayak (1993).

Madhuri Dixit won the first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her acting in Dil. She went on to win the award for the second time for ‘Beta’. She was again chosen for the award for the record breaking ‘Hum Aapke Hai Koun’ in 1994. Filmfare selected Madhuri Dixit for the fourth time as the Best Actress for ‘Dil to Pagal Hai’ in 1998. She also got Zee Cine Award for Best Actress for the film.

Admired for her gorgeous figure and beautiful smile, Madhuri Dixit was held by eminent painter Maqbul Fida Hussein as an epitome of Indian women. She appeared in his film Gaja Gamini (2000), considered as the painter’s tribute to the actress. In 2001, Madhuri Dixit was awarded the National Citizens Award in appreciation of her contributions to the social life.

The heartthrob of the Indians, Madhuri Dixit took a break after her marriage with NRI doctor, Sriram Madhav Nene in 1999. In 2002 she reappeared with a bang in Devdas, which got worldwide attention when it was screened in the Cannes Film Festival.
