Though Anirban Lahiri stayed up all night before teeing off at 7.20 am at the Panasonic Open, it was not the pre-tournament anxiety that kept him awake but his sleeplessness was cause by mosquitoes. On Wednesday, Lahiri managed to retain the sting in his clubs as he played a bogey free first round to lead with 7-under 65.

He enjoyed a two stroke lead over 2004 Indian Open winner, Mardan Mamat of Singapore and Thailand’s Namchok Tantipokakul who are both tied at 5-under 67 for the second position.

Though both Namchok and Mardan also had bogey free rounds, they could not match the consistency of Lahiri. Right from the first to the eighteenth hole, he did not miss a single fairway. His iron play also complimented his game in such a way that some of his birdie putts were within inches of the holes.

Though Lahiri won a tournament on the domestic tour at Panchkula last week, he confesses that the Delhi Golf Club hasn’t been his happy hunting ground but being in the lead at the last Asian Tour event here, the SAIL Open, and then finishing in the top-10 has given him lots of confidence.
